Having lived much of my life on the front lines as a public school teacher working with challenging youth, as a bankruptcy attorney, as a defender representing indigent criminal defendants, and as friend and fellow traveler to those who seek a life of service, fellowship and recovery, I offer you greetings.
I began practicing law in 2008 which was a rough year financially for many Americans. I was teaching at the time and began being asked repeatedly by friends and coworkers if I handled bankruptcy cases. From 2008 through 2014, throughout Southern California, I represented debtors in 90+ Chapter 7 cases, 25+ Chapter 13 cases, and 8 Chapter 11 cases. In 2014, I returned to the Midwest to be near family. When my mother passed in 2019, without a will or estate plan, the responsibility to settle her estate fell to me. I was working as a Missouri Public Defender at the time and it was a challenging period all around. From examples all around me I saw the importance of planning for the changes which life inevitably brings, whether that be death, incapacity, or in-custody! Back in California, I look forward to helping individuals and couples prepare comprehensive estate plans, including wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives. I've held over 30 different jobs. Some of my early favorites were as a child actor for Nebraska Educational Television, a stockperson at K-Mart, and a McDonald's manager. I served 4 years in the U.S. Marine Corps as an air traffic controller, then went on to Main Street Merchandise at Disneyland, waiting tables and other jobs while I completed my degree at UC Irvine. I began my teaching career with the Orange County Juvenile Court Schools, took my first full-time teaching position at a nonpublic school and then taught for 10+ years in Los Angeles. In addition to California, I've taught at K-12 schools in Kansas and Missouri. When problems arise on a job it can be difficult to know where to turn. Perhaps, I can help.
